BBC Young Reporter Day 2019
Wednesday 6th March 2019 was an important day for 10 Northfield students who are members of the Northfield News Team. The group, run by Miss Orley and Mrs Green, meets once a week in the Library to complete workshops on interviewing, report writing and camera techniques amongst other skills. The students work individually and as a team in preparation for the highlight of their year, the national BBC Young Reporter of the Year. For the past two years, the team has successfully participated in the BBC School News Report but this year the focus has changed to Young Reporters.
The students had prepared their topics in advance of the day, so they could spend the news day actually compiling all their reports into a cohesive presentation. The team took over an ICT classroom for the day and set it up as an actual News Room, complete with green screen, cameras, lighting and microphones.
The news team members had thoroughly researched their topics and written their scripts before they filmed themselves interviewing staff members and outside professionals. Blaine, Chloe and Libby (Y8) produced a very topical piece about the use and misuse of Drones. Bekki (Y8) compiled a very informative report about Mental Health issues surrounding young people these days, incorporating interviews with Headteacher, Mr Henderson and a mental health practitioner. George (Y7) produced an interesting insight into the dangers of smoking, while Chloe (Y9) and Blaine (Y8) looked into the benefits of healthy eating. Two Y7 students, Lauren and Evie were participating in the day for the first time and produced an excellent report highlighting the importance of reading books at home and in school.
The whole team participated in the final edit with particular support from Jade (Y9) and Elliot (Y8). Staff dropped in throughout the day to offer support to students and commented on their excellent work and the day ended with a presentation of certificates and congratulations from Mr Henderson.
Well done to all members of Northfield's News Team!
