Commemorating the First Day of the Battle of the Somme
On Friday 1st July a group of students represented Northfield School in joining with the British Legion and other members of the community to commemorate the first day of the Battle of the Somme. A service in remembrance of the casualties, many of whom were local, was held at the cenotaph in Billingham.
Members of the newly appointed Junior Leadership Team read about the Battle of the Somme and what remembrance means to them. A group of our Y9 students, having researched individual soldiers from Billingham who had lost their lives on the Somme, lay crosses in memory of them. Meanwhile a two minute silence was held in school as a sign of respect for the sacrifices made in the bloodiest battle in the British Army's history.
