National Poetry Day 6 October 2016

National Poetry Day, the annual mass celebration of poetry and all things poetical, took place on Thursday 6 October 2016 this year. It was founded in 1994 by William Sieghart, and has engaged millions of people across the country reading, writing and listening to poetry. It is an initiative of the Forward Arts Foundation, a charity that celebrates excellence in poetry and widens its audience.

From 1999 onwards, National Poetry Day has been loosely themed: this year’s theme is ‘Messages’.

This year in Northfield Library & Resource Centre we decided to hold a poetry reading during lunchtime. Students and staff read out a poem of their choice to an appreciative audience of students from all year groups. It would be wonderful to take this forward next year and really get the whole school involved.
