Northfield Dragon Boaters: From Beginners to Winners!

Last year five Northfield students took to the water as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Corey, Declan, Dominic, Maya and Skye joined the Tees Valley Dragons Powerhouse dragon boat team to complete their award in October and nearly a year later they have battled their way to the top of the junior league, paddled to success with the adult team and started Great Britain trials.
At the beginning of the racing season in April at Stockton on Tees, the Power Spartan Juniors were formed after our students progressed in training and wowed the crowds with their power and resilience. The Power Spartan Junior Team is made up of Northfield ‘Powerhouse’ students and St Neots juniors and have been impressing the British Dragon Boat Association all season.

On Friday 22nd September, staff and students once again joined the crew for National Dragon Boat Cup Finals, which is the last competition of the season which ran over two days. Northfield’s Office Manager and Coach for the dragon boat teams as well as  the Great Britain squad, steered our junior team to success with them claiming bronze and gold medals. The juniors joined staff and crew members including Miss Bowes and Miss Orley for the many races which they battled through winning gold in the 200m, 4th in the 500m cup competition and 7th out of 21 in the 2k distance race.
Jackie who is a member of the junior coaching staff for St Neotts spoke about our students as “a sheer pleasure to be around and involved with this weekend. A total credit to your club, school and parents. Their determination, stamina and team ethos was first class and St Neots Dragon Boat Team Spartans are proud to have them as friends and partners in the sport. Well done!”

Northfield School & Sports College look forward to seeing them further progress next year and congratulate the full team on their achievements!
