Students Survive for Silver Status

19 year 11 students started their October half term holidays braving the cold and rainy elements in order to achieve their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award.

For three days expedition and two nights camping, students endured the rain and cold whilst out on their silver expedition. They excelled in navigating themselves through the mud and despite the stormy conditions they used their survival skills to successfully complete their silver award expedition.

The award winners achieved their bronze award in June and continued learning camp craft skills and further developed map reading skills to enable them to complete the advanced level to Silver. They enjoy an opportunity to team build, which supported them throughout the weekend and kept morale high despite the cold and wet weather.

Northfield School & Sports College has been recognised as a flagship school for the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme in the North East and has one of the highest success rates, which is seen by the increasing numbers of students taking part.

This elite number of students surpassed their expectations in the face of heavy downpour and chilly weather conditions, which made their expedition one of the toughest challenges our DofE staff has ever seen. Students overcame the swamped fields, wet kit and miserable weather and impressed staff with their positive attitude and determination to complete their challenge. One member of staff said, “Each student who has stuck this weekend out deserves a massive pat on the back! They have been great! They’ve just knuckled down and got what was needed done, despite the weather, and been a credit to the school.”

Northfield School offers their congratulations to each of these students who have excelled over the weekend and are proud at the young adults for their teamwork, positivity and determination. They have truly demonstrated our school core values of respect, resilience and honesty whilst completing their award and the school and staff are extremely proud of their achievement!

Well done to our silver award winners!
