Year 10 Complete Duke of Edinburgh Expedition

This term 93 Year 10 students embarked on their practice and final expeditions to complete their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.

In July, students got the chance to experience one of the school's favourite campsites at Beacon Farm, near Whitby, in Sneaton for their practice expedition.

The practice expedition is a chance for students to develop their skills in order to prepare for their final assessment. Students enjoyed camping overnight whilst staff ensured our explorers became confident in the essentials of basic camp craft, including putting up a tent and cooking. Our Duke of Edinburgh leaders and other school staff, who came to support the trip, also made sure students developed their navigational skills as they embarked on a nine kilometre hike.

Northfield staff praised the students highly for their positive attitude, determination and their ability to work well as a group. This set them in good stead for their final assessment, which took place in North Yorkshire starting at Carlton-on-Cleveland’s Scout Camp on the last week of term.

After the enthusiastic Year 10 students perfected their skills at the practice expedition with staff, it was now over to these young adults to complete their final challenge of a two day hike (of 9km a day) with full kit on their backs, including tents, food and water without staff assistance or help. The groups were assessed by school assessors for their ability to read a map and navigate themselves along a planned route, for effective camp craft and the ability to prepare and plan in order to survive in the wilderness.

Our students blossomed and worked well in their teams and encouraged each other through some of the hottest temperatures England has seen this year and enjoyed some impressive views. All students were said to be a credit to Northfield School and showed great qualities including demonstrating our school core values of respect, resilience and honesty. These skills helped our young people to succeed in their Duke of Edinburgh Award challenge.

Staff and students are now looking forward to their next challenge together in the new academic term when some students will go on to complete their Silver DofE Award.

Well done to all of our students for this great achievement and in completing their award!
